Selection Process
Preparation of the application
1. Applications must be laid out in accordance with the specified instructions on the appropriate form.
2. Applicants are reminded that the Charity's research remit is wide and that particularly clear and succinct preparation is likely to be helpful to the Research Grants Committee, with members drawn from a wide range of clinical and scientific backgrounds.
3. In their background description applicants should make clear the extent of support for the feasibility of the planned approach by reference to published work, or provision of pilot data. The security of these arguments should be commensurate with the scale of the planned work. The Charity understands the need to develop new ideas where such support may be limited, and provides an innovation grant (providing up to £40k) to cover such possibilities.
4. The Charity wishes to support high quality clinical research, particularly that which is directed towards defining new approaches to the epidemiology and treatment of kidney disease. It is recognised that in some cases such studies (for instance definitive therapeutic trials) may require resources that are beyond the scope of project grant funding. The charity will be addressing these issues in consultation with other bodies, but will consider applications for the funding of pilot investigations designed to provide specific data on which future larger scale studies might be based. As in other areas of funding, priority will be given to projects that are likely to generate research findings with the widest implications for the field. Studies which are primarily designed to investigate local issues of practice or adequacy of care within the National Health Service are considered more appropriate for local or National Health Service based funding.
5. The Charity also seeks to support research relevant to the understanding of the kidney and its diseases across a broad range of disciplines in basic and applied biological research. The Charity is aware of the scale of endeavour required to address many of the problems encountered in these fields of research. Applicants are recommended to indicate clearly the ultimate goal of their research strategy, and the immediate goal of the proposal under consideration. Of particular importance is a realistic, focused experimental schedule. To that end, applicants are asked to include a brief statement of the relevant time considerations and projected milestones encompassed within the proposed work.
Peer review process
Applications will be subject to peer review involving both members of the Charity's Research Grants Committee and External Reviewers invited by the Charity. Applicants are welcome to suggest potential reviewers, particularly individuals working outside the UK, though the Charity can give no guarantee that any particular individual will be used in the refereeing process. Nominated reviewers should be unconnected with the applicant's current or recently completed research programmes. Applications are judged competitively in the light of comments from external reviewers and Research Grants Committee members. Decisions of the Research Grants Committee are final but the Charity will endeavour to provide appropriate feedback for ALL applications.
