ABLE
A Better Life through Education and Empowerment
South Asian and African-Caribbean people are at a much greater risk of developing established renal failure than other ethnic groups. They are also at greater risk of complications from diabetes and high blood pressure than the rest of the population. These are worrying facts.
We are aiming to help these at risk communities by raising awareness into kidney disease, highlighting the importance of healthy living and funding research into the causes, prevention and treatment of kidney disease among the South Asian and African-Caribbean communities. The Charity has called this initiative ABLE - A Better Life through Education and Empowerment.
The original objectives of the campaign are:
- To highlight the incidence of kidney disease in minority ethnic groups
- To reduce the incidence of chronic kidney disease amongst such groups
- Where it cannot be avoided, ensure early referral, optimal treatment, and equality of access to dialysis and transplantation.
Our innovative ABLE programme is designed to raise awareness about kidney disease and help prevent or slow its progression. Initially the programme focussed on the Black and Ethnic Minority communities who are up to five times more likely to get kidney failure than White Caucasians.
