Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is the simplest tax-free way for individuals to donate to charity.

What is Payroll Giving?

Payroll giving schemes or "Give As You Earn" (GAYE), is an efficient scheme that encourages employers and employees across all levels to give to charities of their choice. The employee decides what to give and the employer deducts the donation out of their pay every month or week. On many occasions companies "match give" as their contribution to give more incentive to their employees.

How does Payroll Giving benefit kidney patients?

Like any organisation we need to make long-term plans and allocate budgets. This is of particular importance to the long-term research work that is necessary to seek out the causes and develop treatments and cures for all kidney diseases. Payroll Giving provides us with a predictable, regular source of income that enables us to plan our long-term life saving work more effectively. Payroll Giving donations will enable us to make more commitments to projects nationwide including support to community renal units with the minimum of administration.

What are the benefits as an employee?

You decide on the amount to give and can stop at any time if your circumstances change. You have the confidence that your donation goes to the Fund with a minimum of administration costs. Your regular donations are shown on your pay slip and a record of donations can be obtained at the end of every tax year from your employer. Your donation can be enhanced if your employer decides to "match give". You receive a tax benefit by using this method and your commitment enables us to provide better care for kidney sufferers.

What are the benefits as an employer?

Employers can use payroll giving for a number of reasons. It clearly demonstrates that a company is community minded. It can be used to enhance company image and shows the caring side of business to the community, employees and shareholders. "Matched Giving" often develops into a longer relationship with the charity and involvement in local community projects. Much of the patient care work that Kidney Research UK supports is focused around local hospital renal units which desperately need both corporate and individual help.

What do I do next as an employee?

If you wish to support Kidney Research UK you will need to contact your Personnel or Accounts department to establish if you company takes part in the scheme. If they do they will supply you with the necessary forms for you to complete. The minimum donation is £1 per month (or 25p per week). You can request a statement of your donations at the end of every tax year and can stop giving should your circumstances change unexpectedly. If your company is not part of a Payroll Giving scheme then you may like to consider taking out a standing order in favour of Kidney Research UK.
